Founded in 1895 to serve a booming immigrant population, Saint Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church has stood for over 130 years as a resilient spiritual and historical anchor in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of South Philadelphia. Built from the ground up by working-class parishioners who physically dug its foundations, the magnificent Gothic structure serves as a testament to the community’s grit and faith, even expanding its heritage in 2003 by absorbing the nearby historic parish of St. Aloysius. Today, as the last remaining Catholic church in the neighborhood, Saint Gabriel’s carries forward a vibrant mission of community renewal, multicultural unity, and compassionate outreach under the care of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.) Sisters.
